Choosing the right toothbrush
July 30, 2014
Occasionally patients inquire as to which type of toothbrush is best. While manual toothbrushes cab be very effective, I strongly recommend an electric toothbrush.
The smaller head allows easy access to all areas of the mouth and the electric motion rules out operator error of scrubbing to hard and not doing proper circular brush strokes.
Some of the better electric models are the Oral B Triumph, Sonicare, and Rotadent.
Manual toothbrushes
Manual toothbrushes still can do a great job. Choose a smaller head with soft or extra soft bristles. Medium or hard bristles can be too aggressive and are more likely to promote gum and tooth damage.
Use the soft toothbrush in a gentle, circular motion covering all surfaces of your teeth, half on gum and half tooth.
Using dental floss once a day also helps to clean in between the teeth.
Brushing your children’s teeth
For children who aren’t fond of brushing, allow them to pick their favorite Crest Spin Brush keeps them excited to brush their teeth and helps do a better job. It’ is best if parents brush first and then let your child have a turn. When it is evident your child is doing a good job they can brush their teeth independently. Plaque disclosing tablets are a good tool to evaluate how effective your little one is brushing.
