What to Do If You Lose a Dental Crown

Dental crowns serve as protective shields for severely damaged or decayed teeth, and they can improve the appearance of a tooth after a root canal or address aesthetic issues. While dental crowns usually last around 15 years, they can sometimes get damaged or come loose. If you’ve lost a dental crown, continue reading to discover three key steps you should take until you can see your dentist for a repair or replacement.

Step #1: Contact Your Dentist

If you notice that your dental crown is loose, it’s crucial to contact your dentist right away. Provide them with detailed information about the issue so they can arrange an appointment for you. In the meantime, your dentist will offer advice on how to manage the situation and keep you comfortable until your visit.

Step #2: Locate the Crown

If your dental crown becomes loose, gently place it in a plastic bag to keep it safe until your dental appointment. Remember to bring the crown with you when you visit your dentist. They will evaluate whether it can be reattached or if you’ll need a replacement.

Step #3: Inspect Your Mouth

Examine the area where the crown was to see if any fragments are still present. Additionally, look at the underlying tooth for any cracks, rough edges, or signs of damage, and pay attention to any discomfort you’re feeling. Sharing this information with your dentist will assist them in determining if urgent treatment is necessary.

Step #4: Mitigate Discomfort and Prevent Damage

In addition to the guidance your dentist provides over the phone for preventing further damage and ensuring your comfort, here are some extra steps you can take to handle things until your appointment:

  • Use dental wax – Use dental wax to cover any sharp edges where the crown is missing to protect your cheeks or tongue from irritation.
  • Chew carefully –Try not to eat until your tooth is fixed to minimize sensitivity and prevent food from getting stuck. If you must eat, chew gently on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Replace your crown –If your dentist says it’s okay, try to reattach the crown yourself. If not, keep it in a clean, dry container and take it to your appointment.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever – Using an ice pack for 10 minutes at a time can relieve pain, decrease sensitivity, and reduce swelling.
  • Rinse – Mix half a teaspoon of salt in warm water to create a soothing mouth rinse. This can help ease pain and reduce the risk of infection.

Fortunately, it’s uncommon to lose a dental crown. If it does happen, simply follow the suggested steps to handle the situation. Your dentist will quickly set up a repair to restore your smile!
